Ethel Smyth: A Furious Longing – the Story of Woking’s Composer

Our next play will be performed at the HG Wells on 4,5 and 6 October 2018.

Ethel was an important composer and was friends with many of the major composers and celebrities of the day. Being a woman and British (who internationally had a very poor musical reputation) she struggled to be taken seriously.

To condense the essence of Ethel’s life of passion and drama into a script of an hour and a half has been a challenge but fortunately Ethel Smyth was a prolific memoir and letter writer and her books and letters have formed the basis of the script. The problem has been what to leave out.

Scenes from Ethel Smyth’s life have been interspersed with the story of a modern-day student researching her story. There are comic moments and while much is based on records of her life we have used imagination to capture her spirit, drive and passion. She was an unstoppable force.

If you want to be part of this unique play please get in touch. We are still looking for actors, costume assistants and many other posts.

Rehearsals have just started and are taking place at the Quaker Meeting House, Park Road.
